I have purchased copies of several television series and some full length movies. I take the movies to work with me to kill time, but I have lost some of the discs. Is there a legal way to make backup copies for my own personal use so that I can take the copies to work with me in order to avoid losing the original copies?

You need to use a software to remove the copy- protection on the DVD.

I suggest you download DVD Decrypter and follow the instructions. The files will be copied onto your computers hard drive. Then you can burn your copy to DVD using Nero or Decrypter

Download Nero from

Another good software is DVD43 ("DVD for free"). DVD43 is a small tool that integrates into Windows and overrides copy-protection mechanisms found on DVDs (CSS) and DVD region limitations.

AnyDVD and DVD-Region Free are commercial on-the-fly dvd decryption software which do the same thing but with a few more bells and whistles. Many commercial DVD transcoding software doe not include ripping ability.

===========

Please use these softwares only for backing up your own DVD's and not for any illegal purposes.

I am not 100% certain about this but if you own the original, i think it is legal to make a copy if it is only for your own use.
