The windows xp tools are not the best option to backup.
The best is do an off-site backup to third part servers, so you will be protected in case of fire, stole and et cetera, and not just against hard disk damage or virus.

Heal the virus before you back up.
If that isn't possible and you are certain your computer is a disaster, back up only your data files - documents, music, pix, and such. Then reinstall everything _from the original media_. And then restore the data files. The Backup and Restore Wizards will guide you, but you will need to burn the *.BKF files to disc.
