Just find some place off your computer, (like a free website from google for example) to put a copy of your important files. You can go into control panel on windows XP and use the back up facility it is very user friendly and will guide you through the whole process explaining it. If you decide to upgrade to vista tho, XP back up files have some compatibility issues with vista.

If you are using Norton you can download the most updates databases fro them and store in ur pc or anywhere and just double click it to update ur system. This helps you to reduce you dial up bill. No need for realtime updating.

If you are using other type of antivirus, they may also have such downloads.

BTW, your operating system should never become corrupted. Stop doing what you're doing to corrupt it. (This computer has been running for over 2 years - that's how old it is - without needing to have its operating system reinstalled. Do you need to run system monitoring for system restore? Is backup the same as monitoring?

Yes and No.System monitoring is way more simpler to use. Backup is the tool that makes one-time (or timed ) copy(ies) of a set of files of your choice (you need to know exactly what you want to save). System monitoring runs automatically and is looking for mainly for system files changes.

Backup is meant to be used to make a copy of your own files, in addition to the system monitoring.

On Servers the backup is used to backup data and system settings to a safe place usualy outside the computer (Tape, Removable HDD).

I mean, if a 3rd party were to steal your online backup files unencrypted, is it possible that you could try to access the files 1 day, & they'd be gone?

Get an external hard drive and save your files to that and store the drive away from your computer. Then do a daily backup if you add large amounts of data to your system otherwise once or twice a week should suffice.

Anything is possible on the net. I would read the online policy first and question them about data lost. If you are so unsure about the site buy yourself and external harddrive, save your information to that and then place that in a safe location for when you needed.

I am planning on backing up my laptop and I have a couple programs that my school installed on it which I can't just download. When I backup my laptop, will it also backup the programs installed or does it only backup individual files?

Depending on the type of backup you're planning on doing. If you're planning on backing up the entire hard drive (create a clone image of it), then all your programs will be backed up. If you are simply backing files, then it's not backing up your programs. In order for the programs to work, not only you have to backup the program folder, you have to backup the system folders, the registry, and any other software/services that the program depends on. Two good softwares for such a task are Norton Ghost, and Acronis.

I have purchased copies of several television series and some full length movies. I take the movies to work with me to kill time, but I have lost some of the discs. Is there a legal way to make backup copies for my own personal use so that I can take the copies to work with me in order to avoid losing the original copies?

You need to use a software to remove the copy- protection on the DVD.

I suggest you download DVD Decrypter and follow the instructions. The files will be copied onto your computers hard drive. Then you can burn your copy to DVD using Nero or Decrypter

why would you want to save your cookies anyway? every website that creates them will create them again and many use them to report on you as spyware.

When they are accepting back-up offers it usually means that the offer that has been accepted and is in escrow probably has a contingency, like the buyers must sell another property in order to close on this one. There is usually a time-frame in which all contingencies must be removed, and the property that you are looking at is in the middle of that time frame. So, while they have accepted an offer, they are wanting to line up additional buyers (back-ups) in case the first buyers aren't able to remove the contingencies.

That's when they received an offer and they are waiting for it to be signed. They can't sign your offer but if anything goes wrong with the other they can get back to you. So you would be the "backup".

My understanding is that they have accepted an offer, but of course they want to know who else is interested. Not all accepted offers go to closing for one reason or another. If you want to buy the property, don't be afraid to write a back up offer. After all, you only get to close if the offer is accepted and the other contract falls through.

a backup offer can be a good thing, if it's a property you really like, I have gotten 2 properties with backup offers. you just have to be prepared that the first offer will go through, in this market, the odds are more in you're favor. good luck.

I want to get two terabyte hard drives. I'm going to use one of the drives I have now for my OS disk and then have one of the new drives for saving media and the second for primary backup of the media drive.

So, my questions are:

Is that the best way to set it up as in, if my media catches a virus or bricks, will the second drive likely be affected?

What would the best software for automatic back up be?

You might want to check out CrashPlan to manage the backups. It can backup data to another drive and take care of it all automatically for you. I have been testing it lately and have been impressed with it so far.

I feel like saving a backup on Word is pointless because if my computer crashes the originals and the backups will all be gone anyway.

Also if anyone knows of or can recommend a good web based system I can save backups of my files on, I would appreciate it.

I keep two backups of important files on two separate flashdrives.

There are failures other than a hard disk crash that can befall you, many of which don't damage the hard disk at all.

For instance:

Accidentally deleting the file.

Accidentally deleting all the text in the file, then saving back into the file.

Having the file mysteriously corrupted (many cases of this here on Yahoo! Answers).

Saving the file in a single bad spot on the disk.

I recommend you leave the backup file alone. It's cheap insurance.

If you're talking about the autosave feature, that's not for when your entire computer crashes, it's for when the program crashes in the middle of working. Autosave is one of the most incredibly helpful features for any program and should NEVER be turned off.

And unless your autosave is sucking up valuable resources (you'd have to have a pretty old/not-so-powerful computer to be in this situation nowadays, especially with Word), there's no good reason to turn off a feature like that, even if you don't use it.

Major rule of computing: Don't turn it off/delete/unplug just because you don't KNOW it's purpose. And the same goes for turning something on/running something/plugging something in. I've heard horror stories coming from both of these mistakes.

That being said, if it's still bothering you that much, there is more than likely some kind of feature in some preferences window. Look for Word's general preferences and you could, perhaps, turn the frequency of autosaves to 0, or what-have-you.

But again, I don't advise it.

I have a lot of media files on my computer, I was wondering if it's safe to use Norton Ghost to backup everything since it takes up less disk space.

Now after I recovered the whole disk partition, will my avi or mp3 files still be accessible?

yep. sure. no problem.

Ghost is traditionally for backing up system drives as it has the capacity to do the whole drive or partition.

I think the issue will be with compression. Media files (jpg, mp3, avi) are already compressed. This means that even if you use maximum compression with Ghost you wont really save much room.

While the files are in the archive, as far as I know they're not accessible (I could be wrong about this aspect though as Ive never tried to access file from an Image)

When you restore the image to the drive or partition, everything should be just as it was when the image was made.

I'm helping my friend, she has an office of about 7 computers, and one server. I would like to know what would be that best way to implement a backup. I was planning on using an external drive, and use something like windows live folder share so that every time a file is updated on the server it will automatically synchronize on the external drive. her database which is the most important is about 10GB, so using a dvd burner probably would not help. Can you please advice me on this issue.

What your doing sounds good, but you need to make multiple backups, What she should do is get a tape drive for her server, than she can do a GFS tape back up scheme. Grandfather Father Son backups are basically every day of the week you back up files(Son) Then at the end of each week everything gets backed up(father), then at the end of each month everything else gets backed up(Grandfather). This allows for you to go back to a specific day when everything was working and do a restore if needed, such as if your network get's infected with viruses or your hardware fails. You'll need a tape drive and 12tapes 6 for the days of the week five for the weeks of the month and and one for the end of the month. Just to make sure you get it, you back up every night let's say you start monday, you would do your daily backup's until saturday, then on Sunday you would do a full weekly backup, and this would continue until the end of the month where you would this time do two full backups, only this last backup would be stored in a safe offsite. It would continue this way. Now of course you could use only three tapes and just have one tape save the changes from the previous day each time, but if it becomes infected too all the changes on their are lost. The first method I listed is called Incremental backups which backs up the changes from day to day and only those changes and removes the archive bit on the files, The second method I listed is called Differential backups and backsup everything that has changed but does not remove the archive bit. These are both standard method's in backups. Also the guy above me is right you may need to consider using raid and either getting SATA or SCSI. I would suggest SATA since it requires the least computer knowledge to use, and then use raid one which is Disk Mirroring. Meaning you have and Identical copy of one drive on the other and when one fails you can keep going(depends on the hardware) without failure, but SATA is hot swappable and can allow for little server downtime that way.

Perhaps you might want to try Time Capsule from Apple. If I recall correctly, it is server grade but not server size, and works with multiple PCs for networking, printer sharing, backups (mac) and wireless connections all at the same time. The backup lights and turn signals are on the same fuse which pops when you drop it in reverse. Pops so quick, I can't find the problem. All wires are in the original looms, no bare wires I can find. Thanks.

These can be very difficult to find as I did this for a living for a very long time. I read the other answers and the one guy that said wiring in a headlight across the fuse holder will enable you to have a live circuit will help if you know what you are doing. Cutting wires without cause is a last resort and I would never recommend that. To start the short is obviously in the reverse lamp circuit from the neutral safety switch on the side of the trans. to the rear somewhere. I have found that most of these problems reside in the fact that there is usually a trailer wiring package installed either by the factory or by someone else. I would give a long and lasting inspection under the truck where the wiring loom runs the length of the left frame rail to be sure you cannot pinpoint something here. The problems with trailer wiring or other shorts is generally close to the spare tire area. You might have to drop the tire and get into this area to expose it all. There is a lot of mud and crud in here and there have been cases I found that the wires simply corroded together. So do a thorough inspection of this area. Also inpsect the trailer plug if it has one as I have found plugs with shorted pins inside. As you can tell, I believe you have to look and look some more to find your problem. Good luck.

Your going to need a wiring diagram to be able to tell which wire is for your back-up lights. As a licensed mechanic I would rarely go looking for the short in a circuit like this. I would find where the back up switch is located and cut the feed wire there and run a new wire to the back of the vehicle joining up where the wire feeds the lights at the rear. I would of course have confirmed that the short wasn't in the rear light sockets or that the wrong bulb hadn't been installed in the back up light socket.

Wire a spare headlight into the fuse slot for the one that's blowing.It will light up if there is a short. Now you can work on a live circuit a least. Pull the tail lights assemble out as they can be bad for wire rubbing in behind. Other than that it a wire trace to pin point. Did you inspect the bulbs really good as i have had a few bulbs or sockets short inside(plastic sockets are bad for burning out the grounds)If you can unplugged any connection on the way back to the tail lights if the headlight goes out the short is behind that connection. I've been throwing a backup ball for years and six months ago my husband started to teach me to throw a hook, saying that it would help my average jump up once I got it down. But I'm struggling with it and my average dropped down to 115. When I throw a backupball my score is usually 13-150. I'm getting discouraged.

Keep hanging in there. Any time you make a change in delivery technique there will be a downturn for a while. Look at what happened to Tiger Woods when he made major changes in his golf swing. He knew the swing he had was for a young man and would only hurt his game as he got older. He started learning the new swing and he stopped winning. Matter of fact he did pretty poorly for about a year. Then the new swing and his game started coming back and today he is back being the power house golfer he was four years ago.

Your husband is teaching you the hook and that good. Although the technique might be good for him, it might not be correct for you. You probably need to get some coaching from another bowler with a good hook technique.

Tiger had to fire his original coach because he did want him to change his swing. Tiger knew what he had to do and got another coach that could help him accomplish his goal.

Here's the best answer I can give, and I'm a fellow bowler. Some people get the mistaken notion that you "have" to throw a hook for some reason. A good buddy of mine has thrown a backup ball all his life and is a better bowler than I'll ever be. He also has a mantel full of trophies. My best advice would be, give the hook some more time, perhaps invest in a pro-style bowling glove that forces your hand into the proper position. But if the hook's not working and you are struggling with it, I'd go back to the backup ball and work on perfecting your technique. There's nothing wrong with throwing it that way if it works for you. In a way, you are still throwing a hook, just from the "brooklyn" side of the lane. Good luck.

How do you backup Microsoft Money 2001 (from the backup facility within the program) to a fat32 usb Memory stick. It keeps stating load another floppy disk when there is 4GB of space. I've tried re-formatting to NTFS and have the same problem. I have an older USB memory stick and it works fine with that so why the problem - totally confused.

ntbackup is a good one you can use it it comes with windows any verson just type ntbackup in the start->run or in a dos prompt like c:\> start ntbackup

if you open the first time then just uncheck the wizard and cancel it.

and try open it for the second time this time it will open and you can see your computer in that you can see the "System state" this is the registry just back it up only this will do next time you can restore it back

I just bought a backup tape drive (off ebay) for my pc and I have a tape with information already on it. How do I access the information stored on this tape? I'm using Windows XP. Will I need any sort of special software or is the feature just built into Windows?

You will need to install the drivers for it. If they weren't provided check the manufacturers web site. Once the computer recognizes the drive it will be assigned a drive letter for access.

You need the same software that you used to put the data on the backup drive to retrieve the data from the tape.

I have Win Xp Home, it does not have a backup software.

I am not sure abt Xp Pro, i think it has a backup software inbuilt.

I know that desktop computers have a little battery that keeps the clock going for years. Since a laptop has a large battery that is constantly charging does it also have a backup battery? I would think is needs something to keep the clock going when the large battery is removed.

CR2032 battery is in the laptop as well as desktop machines. This battery holds the time and information stored in the BIOS while the computer is shut down. These batteries usually last approx. 5 years (generally).

Yes there is a battery, the same as desktops there is a CMOS battery on the mainboard that serves the same purpose.

Also known as a RTC/NVRAM or CMOS RAM, CMOS is short for Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor. In the Mac the equivalent is PRAM

Normally the battery is of the same coin cell type as a desktop PC, often smaller and not easily accessable. On older laptops to get at this battery you often have to take the casing apart and remove the board, though some brands and models are much easier than others. The newer Laptops the battery is often just under the top panel of the casing by the display but still not that easy to get at.

In addition to the other answer the CMOS Battery is located on the motherboard, and in most cases it is not easy to access...

You would have to open the laptop in order to change it.

The CMOS battery is the same as in desktop computers.

I have a gateway computer and I told it to restore and make a backup partition of my stuff. I want to go in and get my pictures and music I had on there but I cannot find it in the backup folder. Am I not looking correctly?

Hard question to answer without knowing more.

I assume you are using Windows.....

Did it make the backup on the SAME drive? If this is the case then it is probably as a seperate partition. If you main drive is called C: then your backup partition might well be D: in 'My Computer'

Have a look in My Computer and see what hard-drives are available. This is the first step to working out where your stuff has gone!

You could also try doing a search 'For Files and Folders' for all .mp3 or .jpeg files etc. This will scan all drives and you might be able to work out if your files are hidden there somewhere.

Just two suggestions, provide more info please.

Sounds like you have done a windows recovery of some sort and it has backed up your program files for you but nothing else..

Do a search for .mp3 files (I assume you are using these) and see what comes up. It might take some time but it will find all the MP3's on your computer. If nothing comes up then the files have gone :(

I am looking to set up a client with a file server with room to grow for about 5 years. They currently have a file server running Windows 2000 with 100GB of data.

I would like to set them up with 1TB of data storage or more. The catch is to set up a robust server with great performance and have a backup solution that doesn't require 200 tapes and allows for easy offsite storage.

Their current backup first backs up data to a stand-alone server, and then duplicates that to a series of REV disks. If we went up to 1TB or more of data storage, we would need about 20 to 30 REV disks. This is a solution that just won't work.

Any ideas?

Yea all those answers are good but if people are too technical savy you can always look into an apple based NAS, you can easily fit 7TB of data in a 4-5U chassis. Apple has complete support for Active directory and Windows Domain use, infact you can even start an AD or Windows Domain using the apple server. I am not pushing for apple but we use it where I work and they look great and are flawless

If your going to have 1tb of storage, then you need a SAN or NAS. Otherwise Dell servers are very good. You may hear about how Dell sucks with their pc's, but there servers are very good. My company has 35 Dell servers and they are all very reliable.

NAS is simpler for Storage, go for Sun solutions, expensive but very reliable and robust. You can use a dedicated connection to offsite storage if applciable and transfer the backups remotely.

My mom lost all her pictures the other day and i think they are in the backup file we have on the computer. What part of the backup file are the pictures located in?

the IPD file (backup file) is encrypted. You would need speacial software for that. I wouldn't recommend going about it that way.

First off make sure you are using the lastest version of DTM (Desktop Manager). Go to your cell phone provider's webiste and you would be able to locate what version you should have for the OS version you are running on the BB.

How I would get those pics is the SIMPLE way.

I would take a FRESH backup and save it with todays date. Make sure autoback up is off in the DTM options.

Then you restore the phone with the OLD backup! Once you have the pictures back on your phone. Then use Media manager in the DTM to transfer your pics to your computer.

Once that is done then simply do a restore from your New backup file. Then go back to Media Manager and add your pics on your phone.

Then take a backup image of your phone again!

Delete the other two previous backup images or keep them as you wish!

I know this is a lengthy process but that is the BEST way to make sure that there is 0% loss of data integrity and both your phone and backup images are UPTODATE!

While you at it... make sure you are running the most upto date OS on your handheld. You will need to download the latest version from your service providers website!

the iPod touch backs up automatically everytime you sync and will even ask if you want to back up before you restore

I recently restored my iPod touch: music, videos, 131 apps all with game progress, accounts; all gone

after a full restore and syncing from the backup everything was back to normal so I'm not sure about game progress that is online but if you HAVE to restore then just back it up and hope for the best

Had computer problems and almost lost everything but I was able to fix computer from disk that came with it. Is it possible to create a backup cd with my computer's files on it. I can't use a dvd because I don't have a burner. I also have a 4mb usb flash drive if that is enough space.

To create a backup of your entire hard drive would be excessive for the average computer user. With computers having a bare bones setup of about 40GB, you would need burn about 100 CD's, and you would need 17,920 4MB flash drives ( though I think this is a typo and you actually have a 4GB flash drive in which you would need at least 10 more of those). Data transfer rates are slow with these forms of storage so to copy that much data would take hours. Usually, I simply suggest backing up only your important docuemtns.

You could buy a second hard drive and set up a RAID controller that continually backs up your data so that if one drive fails, you have another drive that is good.

Well my dell laptop came with a recovery drive and some norton backup software but i removed the norton program which also removes the backup drive that was like D:/ but after unistalling it, the D:/ backup drive doesnt appear anymore on my computer anyway of reistalling it?

Do you want to create partition?

I can restore a computer with an image if it's the image was made from the same computer. With a backup I can use it on any computer. So what is it that makes these two methods different?

An image is basically a bit by bit copy of your hard drive. This is why you can only restore it to the same computer (or one with identical hardware).

A backup is data and settings that tend to be OS independent. It is like making a copy of a folder, that folder and its contents will work on any computer that can read the files in the folder. This is why your backups are important in case of file corruption. You don't need to reinstall the OS, just restore the file or files that were corrupt.

Clear as mud?

To add onto the first post, an image is one big file that cannot be changed. It has to be put back on and then you can change the files.

A back up is generally just a second copy of files. This means you can change them, move them and do whatever you want to them

Image = "photo" of the info. on the drive. You cannot run the programs in this form.

Backup = a duplicate of the drive. Programs are runnable from this.

With Acronis you can save directly onto DVD discs, but when I tried it it's soooooo slow.

So what i do is backup to a folder on my hard drive then i burn the images on DVD a lot faster but still annoying.

Eventually what i will do and what you should do is get a hard drive dedicated just for the backups.

If your data is business critical take the time and put them on dvd also.

In Windows XP, when I selected full backup (right click C Drive; Properties; Back-Up) it started backing up to my external hard-drive (like I told it to), but then, it finished the C drive and is now backing up the contents of the external hard drive!

So my question is; if I press Cancel, what will happen?

Do I get to keep the files already backed up? Or does the backup file become corrupted?

My computer keeps shutting down and when I follow instructions on the error report, it doesnt help. Now, I suspect there is serious problem with my pc and wanted to backup important files. I did and saw a backup icon instead of files in the drive I used. When I click, it takes me back to the Restore or Backup Wizzard as if I want to start backing up files again. Do this.

First of all increase your virtual memory or page file size open control panel double click system folder on opening page click advanced than Tick before Adjust for best performance & click apply(it will take a while). Than click advanced in coming window you will find virtual memory click setting. Select drive on which you want your virtual memory to be.Choose other than primary partion, then click custom and change the Page file size or virtual memory size by typing.

Initial size should be 1024 MB at least & max size should be not less than 2048 MB.

1. Search for temp files( In search box type *.tmp) click search. Delete all files that appears after search.

2. Than as above type *.log & do the same.

3. Search Temp folder Delete all it's content.

Backing up is sometimes harder than just copying the files you want to backup. The windows backup utility is notorious for not working properly. I'd recommend using your cd burning software to backup your data. make sure you have the cd burning software on a separate cd though, because if you reload windows you'll have to reload the cd burning software to be able to do the restore of your data.

The Backup app. included with MacOs will work with a file as small as that. You can back it up to a CD or flash drive. If the file size gets to big, Apple requres you to use their .mac service. One of the standard files it will save are Safari preferences etc.

I accidentally saved over my sister's saved game in TES Oblivion. If you don't know how to get a backup from that file, how do you ad a saved game so that oblivion recognizes it? I see backups of quicksaves and I think I could use that, but the game won't recognize it. Someone Please help!

If you actually saved over her game, your data overwrote hers. Unless Oblivion has some sort of automatic backup procedure for saves then I don't know how you could get it back. I can't test it on my own as I don't own the game.

I would like to make some sort of remote backup server so that I can schedule certain computers from different locations backup to a central station. I have looked in both fuse boxes under the hood and the fuse box inside the passenger door. I can't find any fuse labeled for the backup lights.

The fuse is a 15a fuse it is in the underhood fuseblock and it is labeled

R/Comp Rel fuse.

Just in case you haven't found that fuse box, I think on that year model one fuse box was placed in the Center Consol? Remove the Consol box (its the box that is under that hatch that lifts in the center consol)

and look down, should be just back of the shifter.

I am looking for a program that i can make a backup of a program and its settings and then use it on another computer if that is possible.

Sorry but that is not possible. When you install a programme from CD it puts various components in a number of places on the drive. It also puts entries in the system registry. To find all the bits and transfer them to another disc would be impossible. The only thing you can do si make a complete image of a disc and put that on another. This is done using Norton Ghost or a similar programme. It could be used if for instance you had a small drive which was failing. The image could be copied to a larger drive which would then replace the failing one.

I am currently using Windows Vista Backup utility to back up my files on a separate partition on my Hard disk. My entire profile is less than 7GB, but free space on the backup partition 20GB keeps getting smaller and smaller. How do I ensure that this does not happen and still have an effective backup scheme?

Set it to use incremental backups and filter on *.tmp files etc ..

Depends on the make of your computer. If it's an HP, the open the HP Total Care Advisor, select Tools and turn off 'Create Back-up Folder'

I would recommend though that you back-up everything onto a remote hard drive so you know where to retrieve it. Say, once a month, overwriting your previous back-up.

This way you computer hard drive will not fill up with duplicated data.

ya acronis or ghost are the best. you will need a spare partition or disk to put the data onto. The files from disk imaging programs are very large, as they back up your entire disk or partition.

Go to this site - which is microsoft site. Download the software to the hard drive. The software name is zunesetuppkg-x or something like that.

The problem comes in in regard to downloading updates or any other files that are installed on the program with the aid of the internet access. However, it is worth a try. Or hook that computer up to the internet temporarily until you have fully installed the program then use the zune software whenever you want - as long as you don't use the social or market.

I currently am on XP Professional and I want to do a clean install for Vista. I want to keep all the games and programs I already have on my XP computer, what's the best program that can backup all this and burn it on dvds?

You can't save the actual games, you will need to re-install them after vista, but you can save the game saves. Normally they are in your documents folder, or in the folder that the game was installed to.

I believe that belkin do an easy transfer, which can transfer documents and program settings, but not actual programs.

If you are using an OEM machine (hp, dell, toshiba), they normally come with their own backup program, normally listed on the start menu, or on a cd that came with the computer.

I tend to use the backup program that came with my laptop for my backup needs.

The best idea would be to use an external harddrive to store the files because xp can't write to dvd's without 3rd party tools (none that I can recommend). All versions of vista can read dvds, and most versions above the basic can write to them without 3rd party software.

Good luck, and I hope you have a good experience with Vista. It's not as bad as everyone says it is. It worked perfectly with me, apart from a little piece of very outdated hardware from tiscali for the internet, but I solved that with a wireless router.

Because not all sw is Vista compatible w/out updating the actual sw itself, your best bet is to invest in an external drive to slide over what you absolutely cannot live w/out - just make sure that when you install it on Vista, you run updates for everything. I recommend getting an external storage device, such as a USB hard drive or memory stick. Make sure that you get one big enough to fit all of the data you want to backup.

The problem with using Time Machine is that if you move or rename the original file it will create another copy on the backup drive and waste a lot of space. But if you don't move or rename them that won't happen.

Also, if you delete the file from the computer the Time Machine copy will eventually get dropped as the drive fills.

You can just copy them using Finder.

Depending on how big they are you could maybe fit them on DL DVD disks which hold over 7GB. But they have a limited survival life. I'd just copy them with Finder to an external drive.

Try backup them to an off-site server, like Mozy.

"Backup Set Exclusions allow the user to exclude specific items from a backup set. If you select No, Backup Everything and then click Next, you will move on to the scheduling screen and skip the exclusion list selection screens.

If you're talking about Time Machine you can use the Time Machine preferences to exclude certain programs and folders. I suggest excluding your Applications folder because it probably has the most information and contains items that are the most easily replaced.

What size backup drive are you using? It is recommended that you use a backup drive at least 2.5 times the size of your primary drive.

Go to System Preferences, click Time Machine, and then click Options. Just add all the folders or applications you want to exclude. It will include everything else.

You don't actually need software to do it. If you plug your iPod into your computer system and go to My Computer you will notice it loads up there as a removable storage device.

My Computer > iPod > Tools > Folder Options > Click on the view tab > Go down to "Hidden files and folders" > Tick "Show hidden files and folders" > Click "OK"

You will then notice your music folder appears. Copy the hidden music folder over to your hard drive were you would like to keep it and wait for it to copy over. This may take a while depending on how extensive your music library is.

Once it has copied over it is still a hidden file. Right-click the file and go down to "Properties". Go to "Attributes" at the bottom of the window and untick "Hidden". Apply that and it will become a normal folder.

Note: You will not be able to tell what each song is in the music folder. The iPod automatically changes the file names to 4 letter names such as "XRPD" and they come in about 20 songs to each sub folder. This may seem inconvenient, but do not worry -

If you have iTunes and select "Add folder to library" it will add everything from that folder into the library as well as decode the file names into what info the iPod holds about the song which will at least be Song Titles, Album Titles, Artists and Genres at least, depending on how organised your music actually is.

I've found in the past that using software to transfer your songs onto your HDD from your iPod tends to screw the files up - from not being able to play to the album art work getting completely muddled and messed up. This could just be my luck though, but I found the way I have told you about to be the best way to do it.

Hm, Do you mean like your music and movies 'n stuff? Ok, here's what to do:

First, make sure you have an External Hard Drive, and this is in Windows (XP), not mac. Sorry if ur a mac user (JUST GET WINDOWS ALREADY! :P)

1)Open Windows Explorer

2)Go to My Documents>My Albums>My Music>iTunes>iTunes Music, and Copy Everything in that folder.

3)Paste it all into one of your External Hard Drive's Folder

Then it'll be backed up.

As for Pictures, just go to My Pictures, and copy all of those into your External Hard Drive's Folder.

you can make a back-up of your music on the ipod itself, plug it in and tick the box Manage disk usage, then goto computer, right click on the ipod > new folder, name it back-up, the drag and drop your music into it

Well, I have a backup of my game that I converted from .mdf to .iso and burned to a disc. Sadly, it doesn't work in my playstation at all.

First of all your playstation needs to be modded in order to read the disk. If this is the case you should burn it with Nero, using the ''Save image to disk'' and enable the UDF option.

I have an external hard drive that I use to backup everything on my laptop. My daughter would like to have a backup of her music and photo libraries from her computer. Is it possible to use the same external hard drive for two different computers? If so, how do I keep the files from getting all mixed up together?

Yes, to keep them seperate just make a new folder on the hard drive and put her stuff in there.

It tells me that it is copy protected. Do you know a way that I can make a backup copy of the software? It's very expensive to get a new DVD if it gets damaged.

if u have two cd/dvd rom, try "copy disc" option. if one cd/dvd rom, make image file of main dvd and burn that image file in blank dvd.

or

right click on cd/dvd rom and open. press ctrl+A (copy all) and make a folder in hard drive and paste inside. then burn a dvd.

If you could make a copy of Office, everyone would be doing it, loads more pirated copies worldwide and Microsoft would be losing out. I think you'll find it nearly impossible to do.

in all your stamnents where ever it goes you should be able to copy go to - file , to copy it should let you get a paper copy ; once this is done save the paper for the time YOU NEED IT.

The windows xp tools are not the best option to backup.

The best is do an off-site backup to third part servers, so you will be protected in case of fire, stole and et cetera, and not just against hard disk damage or virus.

If that isn't possible and you are certain your computer is a disaster, back up only your data files - documents, music, pix, and such. Then reinstall everything _from the original media_. And then restore the data files. The Backup and Restore Wizards will guide you, but you will need to burn the *.BKF files to disc.

I have an UPS rated around 425VA. It uses a 7Ah battery. I've heard that the backup time can be increased by adding one (ore more) batteries. The make/model of my UPS does not have a connector/cable intended for adding another battery. Should the batteries be connected in series or in parallel (using some separation diodes)? The current drawn from batteries and the voltage drop across the separation diodes might pose some problems. Connecting the batteries in series might confuse the electronics that the batteries is charged. I know that this might be a simplistic approach but did someone tried this? (Any explanation, details, links or schematics wolud be appreciated).

Definitely, you would add the second battery in parallel, and yes, it would probably work fine provided the battery you chose was very similiar (same type, rating, and chemistry, preferably get the same model as the UPS manufacturer did). There would be a practical limit as to how many batteries you could add - the UPS provides a trickle charge to the battery probably 24/7, and if the sum of the self-discharge rates of the batteries exceeds the trickle charge current, the batteries will eventually become discharged. But I would guess at least 2 batteries of the same type will work just fine, perhaps also maybe half a dozen.

I got an external hard drive and used the Vista back-up. Now all my files are in random folders "Backup 1, 2.....55, 56" and I can't find anything. Should I have backed up using the software that came with the drive?

run a disk defragmentation. this backs up your file and puts it in order. go on my computer click local disk and right click to mouse and then select sharing and security and then you select tools at the top and choose the defragmentation option.

I just started using the integrated Backup on Vista. It says that it will NEVER backup system, hidden, or Program Files. Yet the backup too ka good 8 hours with 80GB of data due to the fact it backed up all my program files. Why is this? And How can i fix this? I even went as far as removing the A attribute from everything in Program Files.

I have about 6 gbs of stuff on my hard drive, and I need to back it up. However, my USB ports and my CD drive aren't working, so I need to find a way to just get it somewhere on the Internet, and then dump it onto another computer that I have in the house. Please let me know of any good backup sites, preferably free, though if it comes down to it, I am willing to pay.

actually gmail accounts hold up to 6.7gb of space. though that may take some time to upload. still.. gmail accounts are free. they're generally used for emailing, but i'm sure you can just email stuff to it and store it that way.

none just get nero with dvd backup and problem solve, becareful you might backup a virus or something, so scan everything before backing up. good luck.

What kind of battery backup (volts, wattage, etc) would I need to run a single 100 watt lightbulb for eight hours?

I'm assuming you are talking about a UPS which has an inverter to convert the 12 volts DC from the battery to 120 VAC.

PS, use a CFL, and a 30 watt bulb will give you the same amount of light.

UPSs come in many different sizes and storage levels. I don't think they come as small as 100 watts. But that's good, as they all have limited storage capability.

But assuming you're running the light bulb directly from the battery (no inverters or other circuitry), the light bulb is DC and the battery is rated for the same voltage as the lightbulb, then you need a battery which is 800/V Amp-Hours in size, where V is the voltage of the battery & light bulb. Typically, batteries can't give up all their current before their voltage drops to unusable levels, so in a real world application, you'd probably want to oversize this by 10% or more, based upon the battery technology (lead acid, NiHM, etc.) you're using.

When I start my computer I immediately get a error pop up saying that windows has detected a hard disk problem. I have already tried two things; restoring to a earlier time and inserting a cd to backup the files. None of these work.

What do I have to do?

could be that your hard drive is dying, do you hear strange noises from the hard drive? reinstall windows and if it still says that then you have to replace your hard drive

What CD did you try? What error did you get? I would recommend using BartPE or Knoppix to transfer to an external drive.

Is this the best way to backup and what is the best format for max compress.

leave them as they are MP3 files are already compressed very well , trying to compress further is just not worth it as the compressed size will be virtually the same - use windows back if you need to do it on a regular basis

I assume you mean for storage and not to be able to play them back directly, right?

ZIP is probably the easiest to use bur RAR will make them even smaller.
