How do i save/backup my drivers on my computer before reformatting it so that i do not lose them?

I have a toshiba satellite laptop and all of the drivers are there. How can i back them up so that after i format my laptop i can just quickly install them?

its better to install fresh drivers after you format etc.

I have used DriverGrabber for a couple of years including on my Toshiba Laptop Download it from here:

http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/DriverGrabber/1170699160/1

It is a .zip file so you will need to extract it to a folder. When you do just run the program and it will save any non Microsoft drivers into individual folders in the same folder. Save the whole folder to a cd or flash drive then when you reinstall you can copy the folder to your hard drive and update missing drivers by telling windows to go to that folder.

When you have got internet access go to the website and update the drivers for your model.

I recently found that the utility I got off http://www.pcdriverdoctor.com will backup drivers as well as update them all.

So, if you get that, you can backup what you've got and then restore them after you finish your re-installation.

Then, you can update them all to the latest versions and back em up again!

Good Luck!

do it offsite

I've had this computer for over 4 years and plan on moving to a newer Vista or maybe even a Mac. What are the best ways to backup and transfer my files? And does a Mac making a difference when I want to transfer my XP files to it?

You should burn all of your Pictures, Documents, Video, Music, Program Install Files etc. to a DVD or CD. You can also get 8GB USB Flash drives for about $20. You won't be able to back up actual installed software. You will have to reinstall those. Backing up just means to copy all of your files to a medium that is transferable to another drive.

Get a removable object (pendrive)

or am empty disk and a rewritable CD-ROM

click on start menu, all programs, accessories, system tools, backup

and there you go. follow instructions to complete your task

You can use Mozy to backup your personal data off-site with encryption.

Use this link to get 2.25 Gb for free for your backups:

https://mozy.com/?code=94HW8M

I am using for 2 years and is very good, and FREE.

get an empty disk and start a back up in ur computer the files will transfer there.

I'm don't want Windows Vista any more. I'm planning to cross over to Linux ~Kubuntu KDE 4. And I would like to backup my whole Installation just in case. I'm willing to buy software if I have to. But I would prefer not to.

I seriously suggest openSUSE 11.0's kde 4 cause kubuntu is the worst kde 4 distro out there.

As for your hard disk I suggest buying a new hard disk and keeping the vista one just in case cause well the software that does this is about as expensive as a new hard disk it self.

If u have any questions about suse u can contact me or have a chat with me if u want, otherwise here is opensuse's page

http://en.opensuse.org

Here is my suse blog:

http://snake1990.wordpress.com

here r screenshots

http://en.opensuse.org/Screenshots/openSUSE_11.0

openSUSE is very easy and is the best, kubuntu's kde 4 remix is horrible.

Take care!

I need to backup my phonebook from my blackberry to my pc.I have lots of work contacts stored. If lost...Ahhh!

Download the Blackberry Desktop Manager and install it then plug your Blackberry into your PC via the supplied USB cable. Then just do a backup from the main menu.

Go to BlackBerry.com and go to their "Software" section. There you can download their "Desktop Manager". Once installed you can backup EVERYTHING on your device (ringtone settings, address book, calendar, Web Browser settings... everything..well, almost!)

For EVERYTHING you would ever want to know about any BlackBerry I would highly suggest the user forum http://www.pinstack.com

Every time I try to do the backup on Norton 360, it never completes. It runs and runs, then stalls at around 60-70% backup because it loses Internet connection. I'm getting frustrated. Thanks

If you have any third Firewall or even Antivirus apart from Norton 360, temporarily disable it and then try to Backup.

or

Try to divide your data that you want to take Backup and upload only one part of it at a time i.e if you are trying to take Backup for 4 GB of data try to divide it into parts 1 GB each and then upload each part.

thats why i got rid of 360 ---- an i am a norton fan went to avg --- i back up to external hard drive now --- safer -- and if i crash it wont

I need a program that can backup and restore other programs that have already been installed. I no longer have the installer for those programs, and I cannot seem to find those programs. Could anyone give me a link to some software (Preferrably free) that enables me to either backup programs that were installed or repackage programs that were installed into one installer?

Thanks in advanced!

I'm sorry, but I don't think that what you ask is possible. I make it a habit to keep the installers for any programs I download in a file on the desktop. It uses up some extra memory, but has proved useful on more than one occasion.

I'm not sure if this would help you, but you can get software that takes an image copy of your hd. This means os, apps, and data, so you can restore to a point in time in case of disaster. Wouldn't allow you to take an app to a different computer. I have a lot of apps installed on my computer and don't want to reinstall everything if my system goes bad, so I have an image copy and data bkups. I can restore from the image copy and come forward with the bkups.

I use Acronis True Image, but there is DriveImage, Ghost, and lots more.

I am a novice in working with a laptop (a Gateway W6501 with a built-in SD card drive) on my own and also in dealing with my new digital camera (a Panasonic Lumix TZ5). I need to know step-by-step how to backup the SD memory card to a PhotoImage CDr disk. Then I need to know how to get my pictures from that memory card into my Pictures folder in Windows Vista. I need lots of help!

insert the memory card into your PC. it will probably be in the (F:) drive (Removable Disc) or depending on the setting of your computer. go there and double it, it will display all the photos that the card has. click "Select All" and choose another folder inside your PC or you may create a new folder. on this folder, click "Copy" and all the photos will be copied on this folder. then remove the memory card from your PC. next, insert a blank CD in your PC slot/drive. go to the folder where your photos are, same procedure, click "Select All" and click "Copy" to the CD. the photos will be uploaded into the CD now.

*if the photos are in the digital camera, plug in the camera thru the USB slot. it will open a window to upload all the pics into your PC. you maybe prompt also to select photos you want to upload into the PC as you like. once uploaded into the PC, remove the camera from your PC and same procedure, insert a blank disc. select all the photos and copy into your CD.

you need to connect the camera to your computer (via usp port) or if you have an sd card slot you could use that. Then go to my computer and find the external drive (your camera) and drag the files onto your computer from the folder. then insert the cdr disc or cdrw disc and drag the pics onto the cd. (This is easier if you use a cdrw because there's no cd burning involved)

Hope this helped

I had put my laptop for backup on DVDs

due to short of discs i had to stop it.

So is there any way that i can continue from the same position?

Unless the backup utility you are now using is made to span disks you will need to find another program that does. Most backup utilituies are made to span and its suprising that you have one that doesn't.

Are you by any chanch just trying to copy your files to a DVD? If you are don't. This is not going to back up the system files you need nor is it going to backup any files that are in use.

There are 2 different ways of backing up. One is to backupup the data files and the other is to make an image which will backup everything on the drive including partition information. Both have their good and bad points. The image requires you to reinstall everything that was backed up but will replace your entire system or let you move it to another drive. File backups will restore data back to the backed up disk to replace missing or corrupted data, but will not preform a disaster recovery..

Best thing that I can think of is to get Ahead Nero software program. One of its features is to backup files to more than 1 disc...

I do not have a backup utility on my computer. Am I able to download one?

i'm the third for true image, i've been using it for 3 years and it never let me down.

Use Acronis True Image! It is reliable software that will allow you to backup your entire PC or certain files. With True Image you can store your backup data anywhere you want HDs, CDs, DVDs and other media. It has a scheduler that can perform tasks as often as you want. Learn more here: http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/

Backing up data to another hard drive is not always the best option. If there is a theft or a disaster such as a fire, you would lose your backup as well as your computer.

The best way to backup is online. This has the added bonus of allowing you access to all your backup files from anywhere - as long as you have access to the internet.

This site offers 2GB for free, and you can encrypt it. You can also get unlimited storage for $4.95/month.

http://www.freebackupsite.com

I'd recommend you to use True Image by Acronis. It is quite reliable software which can backup almost everything to any location available.

Since you have an external spare, you should really look into

getting something like Ghost, a drive image program.

Then once you make the image, and store it on the spare,

when, not if, the time comes when you need to restore the image.

it just takes a matter of around 30 minutes for mine.

Of course, the restored image will be exactly like when you made it, so you might want to keep several images stored

made at different time periods.

If you want to backup the entire drive, then use a disk clone utility like Acronis True Image, Paragon Drive Copy, Norton Ghost, Image for Windows, R-Drive Image, ASIS backup etc

Free utilities like HDClone and EaseUs Disk copy are available but the free versions may not support external usb drives

For general backup of specific folders and data try Cobian Backup or Comodo Backup - both are free

When an employer pays an employee (or a company paying a dividend to a shareholder), which is the one subjected to backup witholding?

The employee.

Backup withholding is mandatory withholding by the payor. In the case you describe, the employer would withhold taxes from the employee's pay.

More commonly a bank or investment company withhold's taxes from the earnings of an investor. The most normal situation is that the investor has not provided tax identification to the bank or investment company.

Failure to pay taxes in the past can also trigger backup withholding.

The person receiving the money is the one subject to backup withholding. It usually means they have not paid their taxes in the past, so the IRS wants to make sure they get their money first.

I sold some of my mutual funds in 2007 and the investment company deducted 30% as backup withholding tax becausemy W-8 was expired and I did not renew it before the transaction. How do I recover this money and how? Which forms I should file to the IRS? 1040NR and any other?

Yes, you will file your tax return to get the taxes witheld. A nonresident files Form 1040NR or 1040NR-EZ. These forms can't be e-filed.

I have an ipod touch and everytime I sync it it takes over half an hour. I have a little less than 800 songs. The actual "sync" is quick but then itunes says "backing up ipod" and this takes the time.

My brother has over 1000 songs and he can sync in a couple minutes. His doesn't do the backup. How do I disable this "Automatic Backup"?

probably under options or settings

1. Have you tried asking your brother how he does it?

2. Is there anything wrong with your iPod? (wet, damaged, infected....)

3. Why not just wait it out?

4. Just because has more songs mean nothing; yours could be on a file format that makes you songs take up more space than his does on his iPod.

These help?

What's the best sump pump backup that is availble and most reliable? I have heard negative reviews on battery backups and them failing. My partially finished basement recenly flooded due to a power outage which is why I am trying to pick one out.

Thanks!

You need a backup sump that runs off of city water. If the electricity over fails, you have a 3/4" copper cold water line that will gravity force open your backup system pushing water out of the sump pit. Seems kind of complicated to the non-plumber, but very simple mechanically. Now, this is NOT something you really want to take on yourself, the job is for a licensed plumber, but I can assure you that without power, it will be the only really "reliable" way to buy yourself time until power comes back on.

I hardly ever get any games but I never look after the disks and thought I should make a backup to use and keep the original somewhere safe of Championship Manager 2007 but when I stuck the cd in Nero it said it was copyrighted. I haven't made a backup for about 4-5 years and am a little out of touch now. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

the best software to use for this is clone cd/dvd it works everytime. make sure it is only used for backup purposes tho.

You have 3 choices....!

1. Run the Nero, Choose the option for Copy Disc

or

2. Copy All files from CD to your hard disk & copy it back to CD

or

Use WinRar, make rare files of the cd & Copy it back to another CD

use nero....and use the option copy disc......u good to go

your much better using clone cd/dvd just make sure its for back up purposes only

I don't understand the term "backup withholding" on the tax forms. I need to know whether to check the "exempt" box or not, etc. Thanks in advance!

unless you have been informed by the IRS that you are subject to backup withholding you are exempt.

Backup withholding is when they believe you will owe extra tax - like on bonuses or interest. Some employers will use backup withholding if they question social security numbers while they verify them.

Mostly all employees are exempt.

Most investments are not exempt.

1.When I already backup my pc, do the backup disk contain the operating system and other files I installed in my computer?

2.Do recovery disk also contain this files and the operating system?

Back up is for data you've created (music, photos, letters, documents) & has no operating system files.

Recovery disk has only the operating system (as provided by the manufacturer). Using this may delete any data files on your hard drive, depending on which method of 'restoration' you select from that recovery disk.

Note: if your doing a system restore;

Before you do anything, back up your drivers to a separate CD!

It gets harder and harder to find them, and many places charge to get them.

Try Driver Magician Lite (freeware);

http://www.snapfiles.com/Freeware/system/fwbackup.html

Use the 'identify & back up all drivers' for the first BU; & keep it with your unit.

Data back-ups are separate items from System backups;

Data are things you have created or added to you unit with programs: letters, documents, pictures, music, etc. These should be done every other week or 1X per month.

Windows has a backup built in (System Tools> Backup), but I find it bulky & hard to use.

Your 1st backup should be the 'all' data option as a baseline; after that use the 'incremental', which saves only new items, and changes to originals. This saves space on you backup media.

Ideally 2 copies are made of each backup: one kept with the unit, one kept 'off site' in case of fire, storms, etc.

One decent B.U. application is 'Cobain' (moderately easy to use; freeware).

I want to create a backup disc for my computer so that I can buy a new computer. I also need to know how to delete all of my personal information.

what do you mean by personal information? cant you just delete them manually like deleting internet cache?

regarding the backup thing, do you intend to transfer your files to a new computer? or make a backup of the whole system, then transfer this into the new pc - which is i think not a wise thing to do, because a new pc means that it has new hardwares, so new drivers. i cant seem to understand your question. if you need to transfer important files, you can just copy and paste them into an external harddrive to transfer. with outlook, you can export everything into a pst file, then import them in the new pc.

this reminds me of a blog that is about backing up; everything you need to know about backcing up: http://www.backuphowto.info/

Use "PC Disk Clone Free", a freeware that clones your hard disk to another.

Use "Secure Delete" to delete your files so they can not be recovered ore viewed after.

We are a small Commercial Real Estate firm that is looking for an affordable and dependable solution to backup our server off-site. We have 140 GB of information on our Windows 2003 server, but probably only need to backup about half of that so we will need a company that also allows us to select what we want to backup. I looked into companies like Iron Mountain, but they come in around $750/mo, which is far from affordable. Any suggestions?

$ 750/mo...

Yes, you can find much more cheap solution.

I am using mozy service for off site backup for more than 2 years, and is a good service. Are available a "home" and a "professional" service.

Use the link below to try it for free earning 2.5 GB of free space:

https://mozy.com/?code=94HW8M

For unlimited space backup the cost is about $5/mo, if I remember. Check in the site for the updated costs.

Look for a small Private Computer Tech that knows how to do those things and work out a till with them.

I do that myself and only charge $100 a month for simply things like that, i got a friend of my that also only charges $80 a month.

Its simply get that hard drive and back up all your information like e-mail and quick books. And just put it in that hard drive. Than every month just replace the same file with an updated back up.

well at my work we use a small local company, and any company should let you selected what files you want to backup. Believe we pay 50 per server and then there is a fee per GB. $750/mo is far to much for what your use will be though. I'm backing up 6 servers and i forget how many GBs but we only pay about $400 a month

Its a hosted account with PHP and phpMyAdmin. The source control is local subversion.

The idea is to easily see relevant differences, and I suspect that for example SQL code backup is not the best way to do that.

Let me see if I understand your question -- you want to quickly see changes in your database over some period of time? So you really aren't interested in a back-up per se, but in a quick way to see which data in your database has changed, and how, over some period of time?

If what you really want to see is a change in your database, you could use triggers. A trigger lets you make something happen when an insert, update, or delete is done on a table. So, for example, if you want to keep track of changes to a table "my_table" in a database, you could create a second table, called "my_table_audit" (or something like that) and then create a trigger which copies the old (or new) data in the "my_table" table into "my_table_audit" each time "my_table" undergoes an insert, update, or delete. You probably want to add a column or two to the audit table to record the time the change was made, and so forth.

Just watch out if you do this that you clean out the audit table every so often so it doesn't fill up your database.

You can get trigger syntax and a better explanation of how they work than what I have above at http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/triggers.html

we have a software NAVICAT. you can use its LITE version which is free

connect to server, open related database, right click on it and select DUMP SQL option.

you may also have scheduled backup option on the standard version of navicat (need to purchase it, although trial is available to download)

maybe

I was looking at flash drives, external hard drives and paying a service online to backup. Which is best?

burn them to dvd as data.

for speed the external hard drive - but hard drives can go wrong - the web service can take a long time depending on your internet speed, but this will never fail as the service will have failure contingency - i'd say use the external hard drive - get one with a network port so it can be setup as a standalone device if needed (it will also have a USB port) i'd also make backups using DVD's as an extra precaution.

If a fire were to start, or if the building collapsed, etc. What materials should I buy, how should I backup data, what do I do, etc. Thanks for your advice.

I just need the complete, perfect backup plan. Write a novel as an answer if you need to. I need as much help as I can get

A perfect backup plan may not exist, but you can approach one.

For example, you backup your data daily and store it in bank fault on some media.

A volcano erupts and destroys your pc and the bank the next day.

Extreme yes, but just illustrates why there is no perfect solution.

That said, it is best to get your data off site, in more than one locations. There are several online storage places that will offer off site storage across the internet. This can tend to be slow depending on the amount of data and bandwidth, especially for the first backup. But, incremental back ups after the initial full backup won't be too bad.

A full backup backs up all your files. An incremental back up only backs up files that have changed since the last full backup, (greatly reducing the daily amount of files backed-up).

Backing up your files would probably suit your needs. But if you want a way to restore the files and the OS as it is/was, then you might look at ways to copy/clone the whole drive or partition. I'm not sure this option supports incremental backups, so it would be slower on a daily bases.

You could also find some storage sites your self and make simply scripts that ran on a schedule daily to make full backups and incremental.

An external hard drive is a great back up solution, but may not protect you from fire.

There are "hardened" hard drives out there, meant to sustain large ranges of abuse, (heat, impact, and such), that could be used as back up medium. These could be used in a raid set up. A raid setup uses an extra drive to continually mirror whats on your main drive, so that it matches it always. Using a hardened drive as a raid drive might fit your need.

There are so many backup programs and utilities out that I am not gonna list them. Just search google for reviews.

Like others have said, off-site backups are the way to go. Are you looking for compliance with HIPAA, Sarbanes-Oxley, Gramm-Leach-Bliley, SEC / NASD or another governing agency? I recommend iDrive:

http://www.onlinebackupsreview.com/idrive.php

Since your data will be stored away from your building, if it happens to be destroyed, the data is still safe.

"User data resides on raid protected industry leading NAS/SAN storage devices with multiple levels of redundancy. In addition, regular backups of user data are performed to guarantee availability of stored data"

The best backup is an off site backup plan. Somebody like www.carbonite.com can help. That way no matter what happens on your site your data will be backed-up somewhere else.

If you want it backed-up on site you can do that with a server or back-up computer. But, you lose that if your building collapses.

backup via a secure off site server if you want to build (or have built)fire proof and bomb ready case... then get a T3-or OC-3 connection so you can back it up fast

Child know how to delete temporary files, need to know how to create an backup file that I can view at my convenience.

Temporary Internet Files are used by the browser to load web sites faster. Actually, for security reasons, it is better to set the browser options to automatically delete the temporary files when it is shut down. If you have a broadband connection, you will notice little difference in the time it takes for a web page to load.

I see no good reason for saving temporary internet files.

I might be doing a system recovery and I need to create a backup disc(s). How do I make one?

After booting up your computer, with factory installed Vista for the first time, be sure to create a set of recovery discs of the full factory image. The recovery discs are used to start up (boot) the computer and recover the operating system and software to factory settings in case of system instability or failure. While the steps listed here are for a Compaq PC with Windows Vista, different manufacturers have slightly different instructions and these will give you a general overview of the process.

1. Click Start>All Programs>Recovery Manager.

2. Select Recovery Manager. This will open Recovery Manager.

3. Click Advanced Options. If you are using a laptop and operating on battery power alone you must connect to an AC power outlet before you can go to the next step.

4. Select Recovery disc creation. Click Next. The Recovery Manager will begin creating the necessary files. This may take a while, so be patient until the bar has reached 100%.

5. Read the table of requirements that appears. Depending on the type of discs you use, more or less may be needed; if you use ordinary CDs, Recovery Manager will require more compared to fewer discs if DVDs are used.

6. Insert your first blank disc, having made sure it is fully labeled, such as "Recovery Disc 01" or "Recovery Disc 1 of 2". The optical drive of your computer will have automatically opened. If not, open manually. Close the optical drive and click Next.

7. Understand and confirm you want to go through with the operation using the type of disc you have inserted by clicking Next.

8. Wait while Recovery Manager now creates the first disc. This may take 20-40 minutes as it collects the files, writes the files and verifies the files to disc.

9. Remove the disc and insert the next after the first has been finished after clicking Next. Continue the creation of discs according to the necessary requirements, up until the last has finished creating files.

10. Click Next after removing the disc and then Finish to complete the session. Congratulations! You have just made yourself a set of recovery discs.

11. Use the recovery discs to recover your computer in case of system instability or failure.

I opened an account online and they won't release my opening deposit until I sign some "agreement". This 'relationship' agreement wants me to check a box saying that I will be subject to backup withholding for under reporting of interest. But I haven't had massive amounts of interest on my accounts, so I just wonder what it--backup witholding--means so that I don't sign my life away.

What they are asking is if you have had lots of interest income in the past but haven't paid any taxes on it. Unless you have recieved a notice from the IRS specifically telling you that you need to have a back up withholding, don't worry about it. Just say that you are not subject to this withholding and open up that account

Short answer if you don't know what it means your not subject to it.

You are required to give a valid Social Security number to the bank when opening an account. If you don't, the bank is required to withhold taxes from the interest you earn. I think Backup withholding is 20%, but I'm not sure.

I've seen backup withholding as low as 20 cents for a year's worth of interest of $1.00 (One dollar)

Yes it will wor if you save all your data in some SD cards and then put it in the same wii

ok before you go erasing everything on ur wii. . it tells you that all data cannot be retrieved even game saves on SD cards. and also your console # changes along with it so you might want to write all your friends codes down if you havent already. they get erased too. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/accuse_write?qid=20071007190217AAicdtj&kid=ALdcInPiLHRlpIA0JD42&s=comm&date=2008-05-18+02%3A42%3A07&.crumb=

My dream is to become a backup dancer or in a music video. Do you need an agent to get booked? Or is it possible to find information about the auditions on your own? Thank you so much! Any extra advice is greatly appreciated!

visit answers4dancers.com

that should answer any questions! :)

It is possible to find auditions, but the problem is finding the auditions. Many pop starts like britney spears and/or christiana aguilera already have back up dancers, but I'm sure if you search and search the internet you can find something.

I was put on antibiotics two days ago and told to use backup protection for the rest of this pill pack. With where I am in my pack and the course of my medication (2 pills a day for ten days, but it will end up being 11 because I took one pill at night and so the morning of the 11th day will be the last pill.) I had ten active pills, including the night I started the antibiotics, then my seven placebos. I have heard that you should use protection for the course of the medication and for seven days after, and then you are protected. Using that guideline I will have taken one active pill within that 7 day after period. But I have also heard that you need to take 7 active pills before you are protected. But since I will hopefully have had my period (little incident, so that's why I say hopefully) and will have started a new pack then I should be protected right? Or should I keep using condoms until I have taken 7 active pills?

use extra protection during the length of your meds, then for an extra 7 days after you start your new pack. Remember your period pills have no hormones in them just extra iron to start you period. You really do not have protection while on your period pills.

I'm sorry but no one wants to read this long, drawn out stuff....these questions are for your DOCTOR.

I say use protection until you are finished with the medication and keep protected even two weeks after you are finished. It's better to be safe then sorry.

id keep using condoms just till ur totally sure.

A week.

you confused with me your statement. If you were told to use back up protection for the rest of the pill pack do so and to be super safe I would use it the first week of the next pack just to be safe and you should be good to go

After a catastrophic flood, I need to purchase a backup system. Please only respond if you know what you are talking about.......a contractor or plumbing professional.....Thanks!

any brand , and a large GPM rateing, [gal per min] just be shure to add a solar panel or a good battery charger to keep the battery in top charge, and test it once a month,

why because if the power goes out and it is flooding the basment theres a way to pump it out,

The companies I recomend are RPT, the RPT-50 model and Eagle, the Eagle 1 Battery Back-up.

you can check them out on-line.

Both have high amp ratings, can add solar panels or trickle chargers for the battery lifecycle.

The best requires a lot of input as to your needs. How much are you willing to invest?estimated time pump will have to run on battery?estimated gallons per hr ? How high will the pump have to lift ?

Check the sight below good information:

the best thig would be to use the same 12 volt sump pump they use in boat bilges, you can keep a trickle charger on the battery all year long and it will pump just as well as a regular sump pump. Buy good deep draw battery and it will last for days after a power outage. A good battery back up or UPS

can cost as much as 5000.00 dollars and will only last and hour or two at most

You want a battery backup that uses a deepcycle battery and solar panel charging.

A cheap generator is always a handy choce too in case there is no sunlight.

I am planning to reformat my PC and I don't really know how to make a backup. I'm quite a dummy when it comes to this because it is my first time to do it. What are the ways to make a backup for my PC before reformatting? Please give me options and an easy-to-understand idiot guide about this. Thanks alot!

I'd recommend you to backup your data and OS to the external drive using Acronis True Image. The latest version of ATI along with an image of OS also enables to create an image of media files and Outlook files. It's very simple software and you can easily backup important data just with one mouse click.

All versions of Windows include backup programsâ€"but they do not always install themselves by default (XP Home, for example).

To install the Windows backup program: Put the original installation disk in your CD drive and navigate to the folder called /Valueadd/msft/ntbackup.

You will see a file entitled ntbackup.msi. Double-click this file and it will install the free backup program. The free backup program will then appear in the Systems Tools folder (click Start, All Programs, Accessories, Systems Tools, Backup). You can now put (backup) the data on another computer, another hard drive, or a CD.

SyncBack is a really good program. Below is a link to a Freeware site that you can download it.

here the link where you can download it.

frankly speaking there are a lot of free backup sollutions, but all of them have a greate minus - they don't have support, so if something goes wrong it's hard to find out what causes it

to my mind you shouldn't save money on such products, coz they deal with you data and as for me i must be sure that everything would be ok, so i recomend you to use True Image from acronis, it's a very good prog, i've already use it for 3 years and never had unresolvable problems.

http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/

so it up to you what to choose Good luck.

Use Symantec Ghost

If you plan on choosing what files you want to back up, I highly reccomend LogMeIn Backup or Genie Backup Manager

The backup normally would consist of all the files that you have created on your computer such as word files, excel files, database files if any, pictures, images, songs, movies, Internet explorer favourites etc. Ideally you copy all of them in one folder if possible under different subfolders, then write them together using a cd or several cds/ dvds . This will keep your hard disk ready to be formatted. You will need to reinstall all the programs that are currently on your computer, you can't back up them.

Your files will be mostly in My documents folder, on desktop, and in some folders created by you.

First off, you can only backup certain file types, you CANT backup most of your programs, they would need to be installed, you will need the installation disks. You CAN copy any files you created in software. Example, you can copy text files, music files, picture or image files, etc. You cant copy microsoft office, video or photo programs, games, etc. If you seriously are considering a reformat, I would think twice before you do! If someone told you this was an easy way to rectify a problem with your PC, kick them where it counts and DONT take their advice! If you DO decide to reformat, keep in mind, you WILL lose data you forgot all about! Lastly, when you start with your newly installed windows, when you create files, do yourself a favor and remember these three tips! Organize, organize, and organize! When you create files, download files, save files, direct them to appropriatly named folders in "my documents". Create folders in folders in folders if you have to! This will make it much easier when it comes to the next format!

You will also find that you will be hunting down drivers for your hardware when done! No matter what anyone tells you, a reformat is NOT an easy thing to do!

burn them to disc or use an external hdd to copy them to

if you have XP you to

Start->programs->Accessories->system tools->Files and Settings transfer wizared

this will do most of the work for you,

unless you have a virus then the less you copy the better

definitely copy out ur windows folder to a dvd or an external harddrive to use to search for any drivers u want ... also copy out any other folders and data u want to save ... you will still have to reinstall any applications after u reload windows tho ...

I'm assuming those of you who work at nice restaurants have a line backup (or a similar position). This person arrives before most of the line, keeps everything on the line stocked, and quikcly makes up any food that gets run out of. Also responsible for pulling next days food. Extremely stressful position and at times you just get your *** kicked. Was just wondering what the average person int his position might bring in per hour?

I am running Windows XP. I have a 40gb on my laptop, with 4.28 gb of free space. I have a ton of files and no centralized backup. What is the most efficent, space and cost wise, way to backup my hard drive?

With 36GB of data, you have too much to consider using CDs. I'd say get an external hard drive which connects via USB 2.0 to your laptop. (If you only have USB 1.0, it'll take a lot longer, but it's still the only reasonable way.)

These things aren't very expensive, only a little more than an external dvd drive. Last weekend I saw several of them on sale at office supply places like Staples, OfficeMax, and Office Depot.

After the backup is done, be sure you disconnect the external drive and store it some place away from the laptop. Makes sure that some catastrophe, like fire, won't destroy both laptop and backup.

You probably need to move some of that stuff off your hard drive anyway. With just 10% free space, your laptop must be running pretty slowly. Shoot for 25% free. Could you move some of the least used stuff to CDs? Just a thought.

DVD (if you have dvd burner)

CD (if you have cd burner)

and

Laptop Auto Backup (only certain laptops have that)

Depends upon what you want to backup.

I have multiple computers and sometimes with critical files I e-mail it to my other computer so I have those files duplicated. I also have a USB hard drive, they are very inexpensive, so back up to that hard drive and move it from home to work. You might also make sure you have a recovery CD for your critical files.

buy a flash drive,,, and use it,,,, else, write a DVD,,, or else,, i donno any other stuff sorry

with a flash disc or on another computer!!!!!!!

Set your hard drive in REVERSE and have them backup off your HD.....

If you are wanting to back up a sufficient amount of files, try buying an external hard drive. It will cost a bit more but you can save a lot more files. Just hook it up to your computer, click the files you want to store and drag them on to the external hard drive, once you have all the files you want to save stored on the drive, unplug it and store it on a shelf in your office....very easy. The problem with a flash drive is that most of them are so small that they can easily get lost, but if you don't lose things and you aren't needing to store that much, then try out the flash drive. However click the link below and you can browse through the external hard drives and see if there is one that will work for you.

I have been using Stomp's Backup MyPC for quite some time now, and I like it. It allows me to backup to CDs or DVDs, and it can do full backups (including Windows and registry), incremental, individual files, etc.

From a full backup, you can also completely restore your system, once it is booted to Windows (such as from your restore CD) and your Backup MyPC software is loaded. This will restore your entire system, including Windows, applications, registry, user accounts, etc.

These comments are for version 5.0; I do not know anything about the newer versions. I also do not know anything about their newer product PC Backup.

What is the safest way to backup my computer? I want to back up programs like Microsoft Office, my iPod/iTunes, etc to my flash drive or a CD. What is the safest way to do this? How do I backup these programs?

You can use the free Mozy to backup your personal data online securely. Is an install and forget software; it will keep the backup uptodate with no action.

Use this link to get 2.25 Gb for free for your backups:

https://mozy.com/?code=94HW8M

I am using for many months and is very good.

In my opinion the safest way is to backup your important data incrementally on regular basis using True Image by Acronis. An off-site storage is more preferable because neither crash nor virus attack can affect an image. As for backup location I think that the best one is external drive because it is more reliable and big than CD/DVD.

http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/

Just make sure you back up the INSTALL programs. I prefer flash drives to cds, as cds can more easily become unusable. Also, you might consider buying an external hard drive to replace your flash drive. You can back up tons more data.

copy your files and install files and serial numbers to a flash drive, if you don't know the serial number try keyfinder.

The safest way is to back it up on a flash drive or a CD. Or move the files to another computer and keep them there until needed.

Now that Terabyte hard drives are so cheap, I have two. What is the best way to backup these drives for long term archive? I'm tempted to just buy terabyte drives as backup, and store them in a waterproof container, but do they do OK when just shelved for long periods of time?

If you put them on shelves for a long time, moisture tends to accumulate on it. You could put it in a waterproof box to make sure that they don't get wet and get messed up. you could also just put the hard drives in boxes along with song moisture absorbing packets. By the way, as Schecky said, use anti static packing to protect the hard drives.

For long term storage. As long as the environment they're in is clean and dry (and not near anything magnetic) they should be just fine. What you might do is take a thin piece of cardboard and wrap it around the inside of the waterproof container. This should reduce the risk of damage if it falls off the shelf, and will also reduce static electricity (plastic is a great conductor). Do not use duct tape one the container (to tape the card board), it becomes statically charged when you tear a piece off the roll. I would create a cushion around the harddrive using a towel, just do it while standing barefoot (without socks).

yes, also make sure you go with good brands, not just cheap ones- in my experience Seagate and Western Digital are best :]

you could always back up a TB on another TB or in two 500s

They do ok. Keep the anti static bag and store it in there.

I would buy more drives, yes.

get you a 1tb external

I am getting a free express upgrade to windows vista home premium. Therefore I am not getting any backup DVDs of the software. I want to know if there is anyway I can make a backup of this OS.

get yourself a spare hard drive and use a disc cloning or imaging software to make a copy of your hard disk onto the spare, should you crash then you can swap the drives over and use the same process to copy it back to your original.ok you will lose your files etc since you got your pc but if you do regular backups on cdr or dvdr as you should do then you shouldnt really lose much at all.

Hi, try to use norton ghost for it I think it can be useful for you.

check it out http://norton.com

no, your screwed. Never get OS's put directly onto your HDD. Always go to the store, and buy the DVD's. You pay the same amount either way, MS is just trying to screw you.

I accidentally wiped XP from my HDD one time, I was F*cked. Luckily my friend was smart enough to have the CD's.

Just recently I attempted to backup some of my files to an external hard drive using Windows Vista's Backup and Restore center. I noticed that during the backup, about 1 GB of data showed up on my primary hard drive. What are these files, and how do I remove them?

Hmm... I suggest you use this backup tool: http://www.freesoftwareworkshop.com/backup-hard-drive-driveimage-xml/ . It's available free of charge.I've used it before.

I had updated 2.2.1, done a backup, done jailbreak and while restoring the data i had disconnected the iphone from itunes because i was leaving for a meeting. Please help to restore the backup again.

Connect it again and restart the restore from within iTunes.

Here's the full official info page from Apple.

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414

If you are using a jailbreak iPhone then you can use other third-party management tools that would be better than iTunes.

My Sony VAIO, after being dropped, is unable to load the operating system. If you have tips on fixing this, please do share.

However, my real question is, how do I backup that VAIO remotely? Or copy specific, important files? I have a 2nd computer and one of those USB-to-USB cords (however, the software that was included with it requires installation on both computers). Thanks.

Download Knoppix 9since you obviously have a working computer ) and burn it to a cd. After that turn your laptop on and pop in your drive quuickly, and press enter when prompted. This is a bootabe IOS and you should be able to access your files through this. (i dropped my laptop down the stairs and used knoppix to grab my files off of it). Good luck !

PS even though the knoppix download takes really long time, its totally worth it.

This is a tough one, if the computer turns on and passes the computer checks and does not load the OS could mean that the hard drive is failing, which is where your data is. If this is the situation I would put in the OS disk and run a repair, to see if it fixes the OS info and runs it, but you said you dropped it which could have damage the internal workings of it and there is no fix for that, time to get a new hard drive and be more careful.

You probably will not be able to backup any files if it does not boot to the OS. You can take it to a qualified computer technician and have them try to recover the hard drive. You should know that this will not be cheap. Unfortunately nobody thinks to do a backup of their important files until something goes wrong. Good luck!
